They're not the party of small government, nor family values, or fiscal responsibility.

No, there's no confusion. The GOP discovered that raising the red-flag social 'wedge' issues (commonly referred to as Guns, God, Gays and Abortion...and you can throw in Immigration) is a great way to get elected. However, the people who FINANCE the party tend to lean Republican because they like low taxes and minimal regulation on their businesses, not because they give a &^%! whether or not gay people get married. So, for the past 40+ years, GOP rhetoric has been a mix of 'small government' for the rich and powerful, and big intrusive government for the poor and ostracized. Meanwhile, actual GOP governance (and the Democrats have been guilty of this, too) has largely been Corporatist Kleptocratic. I don't think they are confused. They know exactly what they are doing, and how it continues to win them elections. http://www.amazon.com/Whats-Matter-Kansas-Conservatives-America/dp/080507774X/ http://www.amazon.com/Free-Lunch-Wealthiest-Themselves-Government/dp/B002HREKHS/ http://www.amazon.com/Predator-State-Conservatives-Abandoned-Liberals/dp/1416576215/

You have confirmed why I'm an Independent. I truly want small govt, less regulation, more enforcement of existing laws (no playing favorites, i.e. illegal immigration). I want the govt out of decisions re reproduction, marriage, health care. I want minimal taxation with lots of representation. Happy Thursday!!

If your talking about abortion that's hardly controlling your right to reproduce if they wanted to do that you would have a mandatory hysterectomy or vasectomy. If you talking about gay marriage I believe it was the governments of the states that allow it, to pass it into law without the vote of the people. California is a prime example. Health insurance coverage already exists for many many people on disability, unemployment and welfare. We ARE taking care of these people and the elderly.

A comment on your 1st point. Rosie, My Friend, I believe that you already know that I am pro-life; so here goes. Roe vs. Wade, from day one, was was a total misrepresentation of our Constitution, specifically the 10th Amendment, the same as Dred Scott vs. Sandford in 1857 was a bad and unconstitutional decision. The whole issue of "reproductive rights" should be decided in the states and not by the Federal Government according to the Constitution.

Methinks that the Republican Party can be best explained by watching the movie: They Live. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/They_Live
