  • American Gods by Neil Gaiman
  • The Twilight series. I really did not have any desire to read them, but my coworkers were going on and on about it, so I started reading them begrudgingly. Then I was hooked.
  • I've not a read a book in 2009 that I would recommend to everyone. Can I cheat? Years ago I read - " One True Thing " by Anna Quinlen (spelling?) - and it was so good I refuse to watch the movie version of it. :) I would recommend that book to everyone. +5
  • The Kindly Ones -- Robert Littel. A WW2 novel told from the point of view of a young, sensitve aristocrat German Officer who, through his connections, meets everyone and seems to get involved in every major battle of the European war. This novel uses factual history and actual characters to weave a pattern through the war and Germany that has never been written about before. I have read about WW2 for many years, and seen much of the filmed history of the war and the camps--but no one has ever captured the very essence of war and civilian life in the way that Littel has. If you read one book in the next three years read this one.
  • For serious readers: "2666." This is nto science fiction, though the title sounds like it. It is the story of the mysterious Mexican murders of women that has been going on for the past 15 years in Juarez. A sex cult, the Mexican Police, drug gangs, have all been blamed, but the murders go on without solution.
