The 1st September 2009 is being marked as the 70th anniversary of the German invasion of Poland,which commenced World War 2. Do you believe America's President Harry Truman was in his right mind to sanction the dropping of the atom bomb to cut short WW2?

I wasnt alive then....but my father fought in WW2 and he swears by truman... so I can not give any opinion accept I am glad my dad came home to he could make me! +5

No, I think it was more as a real life test. After seeing the results I don't think they'd ever do it again unless another nutty country decided to nuke someone and there was no other choice. We are made to believe just about anything and many of us are gullible, so we do believe. But to believe that we had to drop two bombs to make a point? Why not just one if that was the case. The government was so devastated by this event that when they discovered the USSR was beginning to test the atomic bomb in the eary 50's they didn't no what to do. Certain US military higher ups wanted to go in and fix the 'problem' immediately. They didn't and what followed was known as the cold war.
