The price of stamps, given inflation, has gone down about 12% since the creation of the post office. You're paying 44 cents to have someone come to your door and take your letter to anyone in the United States within about 3 days. Sounds like a good deal to me.
I understand that the answer may simply be "Because people might buy them instead of Forever Stamps, and the Post Office makes more money, in the long term, if they do."
