the tools used to make a gun barrel leave characteristic marks in the metal. when the bullet goes through the barrel it gets engraved with the same markings. as long as the bullet isn't totally destroyed those markings can be measured and matched to the barrel of the gun that fired the bullet. The same techniques apply to the empty shell casing from a gun. The breech face leaves marks, the firing pin leaves marks.
