Why does it take so long to get the results of blood tests

Labs tend to be very busy and have to prioritise samples in the same way as patients are triaged in A&E (or the ER in the US). There will only be a limited number of lab staff and a vast number of samples from possibly many hospitals and GP practices. Some tests require protocols that may take anywhere between a few hours and a couple of days.
