I've heard that you should shock yourself (not literally) back into the present--by holding ice cubes, counting backwards by three, deep breathing, etc. Something that will make you make you aware of your current environment.

put both feet on ground. breathe slowly and deeply. open eyes and choose an object to focus on. If you're alone, get near someone safe. describe to yourself, out loud if possible, the difference between this situation and the situation that caused your trauma. Remind yourself you are developing and using skills that can keep you safe. "This is October 13, 2008. I'm with John. He's safe and caring. He does not judge or hurt me. I have learned how to choose to protect myself. That was then, and this is now. I am more than I was, and I'm getting more competent." Sing a reassuring song or recite a comforting poem. Pray.Flip through pictures of your current beloved persons/pets. Give yourself a foot rub. Do all this even if you don't feel like it, or believe it will work.
