obesity is directly correlated with the digits on the calendar. so, it must be the years that are making us bigger. it's partly restaurant portion sizes, partly the side-effects of medicines that americans increasingly take, partly its the payment for our delusion of prosperity, partly its that we coddle our kids inside with klondike bars rather than let them outside vulnerable to the ravages of the elements or terrorists.

I don't know if they are. What's termed "fat" today is very different from what was termed "fat" 30 years ago. People need to just worry about themselves. Some of the healthiest people I know are overweight.

Eating too much. Exercising too little. People used to think nothing of walking a mile or two to the store to get something. Now everything can be delivered. You barely have to leave your house. They even have medicines that melt on your tongue in case you're too lazy to suck.

There are many reasons; here are a few: - high levels of sugar in soda pop and juice drinks - food additives, including high fructose corn syrup - children start using computers, video games and watching TV at very early age, reducing outdoor exercise - high consumption of snack foods - high consumption of fast foods and convenience foods; much lower volume whole foods than in previous generations - both children and adults are more sedentary than in previous generations I'm sure there are many more causes, and hopefully others will identify them. Some are trying to stop smoking, because of the high cost of cigs. When trying to stop smoking, people tend to eat to replace the cigs. That could be part of the reason. +5

Lack of activity, coupled with an unhealthy diet, that and they are still relying on BMI to measure Obesity and BMI has long been known as not accurate, when a daily weight lifter is listed as morbidly obese, well you know you have a problem.

Fat people eating enormous amounts of food and not exercising. Simple.
