How do I know for sure if I need to replace the thermostat on my truck forand not the water pump.

    A thermostat usually fails either by sticking open (causing the engine to run cool and the heater to perform poorly) or by sticking shut (causing the engine to overheat).

    A water pump usually fails either by leaking (which you can spot visually) or because the shaft bearings fail. You can see/feel the 'play' in the shaft, and the pump will frequently make nasty noises as it turns.

    It is uncommon for water pumps to fail internally with no external signs that they've gone bad.
