I'm having a hard time coming up with an answer to your difficult question. I tend to say "taxing"...

I see it as two slightly different meanings. It is hard to get out of bed in the morning (I feel lazy and want to continue sleeping), but it is not actually difficult (you just put one foot on the floor and then the other).

It's kinda hard, but it's getting more difficult,.... to understand what you mean.
-
Difficult.

Both. The difference between the are (to me) are as follows: Difficult is where you are met with a challenge and have the tools to face it. Hard is where you are met with a challenge and do not.
-
Both. I'm hard and she's being difficult.
-
Depends. If it's a challenging task. . . .I'll say difficult. If it's a substance that's hard (instead of soft), I'll say hard!
-
Well I guess that just depends on what I'm referring too! ;)

It depends on the subject, situation and the audience.
