  • I always thought they'd be of lower quality, but my parents recently built one for retirement and it's quite nice. It has a full basement and you'd never know it was fabricated unless they told you.
  • The new ones, built with very good footings and basements, that meet the same code that other non pre-fab houses meet are nice and much cheaper than a non pre-fab home. The only problem is that in most areas they can only be built or "laid" on a lot in an area specifically zoned for that type of house or trailer homes. That bothers me and I think it is unfair, but in many cities, it is still the code/law.
  • still nothing but a trailer. nothing has changed.
  • There's many different types and quality. I've seen some very big ones with second floor and such. The newer ones come in components you can add on.
  • Prefab homes are ok as long as they meet current building and fire codes. You also want to make sure they offer the same warranty as a stick built home or trac home.
  • Pre Fab homes are a great value if you are wanting quantity vs. quality. They are an assembly line house built for affordability, not reliabilty but often meet some individuals needs.
  • great way of owning a new home.
  • I have seen some really interesting ones lately. One was just built by my house, they really made it look nice by adding a big deck and nice landscaping. It really doesn't even look pre-fab. Some of the more modern ones look alright. I still think they might be of poor quality. Another thing is that customization might be easier to work out with a builder. I would probably live in this one. http://www.prefabs.com/PrefabHomes/LivingHomes/ModelHome.htm This website has some cool ideas. http://www.prefabs.com/modern_prefab_homes.htm (some of their ideas are crap)
  • I live in new england, worked in residential construction for 30 years and have worked in some prefab houses. in the long run i am not shure how much less expensive they are, you still need a building lot, foundation, sight work, driveway, elct. hook up, sewer hook up or septic system, garage, landscaping. The materials used in all the ones I have been in ( kittchen cabnits, trim, doors, windows, carpets, ect..) are not as good a qualty as what most builders in this area would use. I have seen houses deliverd in good shape then suffer extensive damage being moved off road on to lot and being lifted by crane to put in place. the only positive thing I can say is it is quick but so is McDonald's
