Most likely, it is either a misadjusted or dirty lens on the cd-player. If using a cd-cleaner doesn't alleviate the problem somewhat, and the drive begins to make a muffled thumping sound, what is happening is the head is not finding the data where it should be on the cd, and the head is resetting to detect track 0, then trying to access again. As the head progresses out from the center, it becomes increasingly unsyncronized. Unless you have adjusted cd-players before, your only solution is to have it serviced by a professional.

Many older Xboxes are now getting problems with the DVD drives that they shipped with. The Thomson is the worst, as it was a budget drive to begin with. Other older drives have this issue as well, though - it really depends alot on your usage. In any case, drive replacement (all Xbox drives will work in any version xbox) is the cheapest, easiest, and quickest way to fix the problem. Prices go from $30 for a replacement Thomson up to $120 for a modified Samsung SD-616T... No modchip is required to install these drives, they are all OEM or made to function as OEM. Also, a regular PC drive will not work. Xbox drives have reversed motors, different connectors, and special software that allow them to read Xbox discs. A modded Xbox CAN be made to use a PC drive, but it cannot read original Xbox media.
