Why did Louis XVI get involved in the American revolution, ok he wanted British troops and ships tied up over there, but did he not realise that the idea of supporting people who are opposed to being ruled by monarchy, would lead to only one thing?

King Louis became involved in the revolution only after lengthy negotiations. The idea that there could ever be anything other than a monarchy governing France was incomprehensible to the king and his ministers. -
