For the same reason we have several federal holidays honoring the birthdays of people have been dead for years and even centuries. People like reasons to celebrate and will take any reasons. Birthdays tend to work. This is a world who's biggest single annual celebration is for the "birthday" of a figure who it is not universally acknowledged to have actually existed and who's birthday we do not know.
