What is the appeal of wearing black, chains, skulls etc.? (I ask out of pure curiosity) What is the desire/motivation/thoughts behind wearing these types of things?

Because these are taboo, they simply imply misery, pain, mystery, just being a rebel. If you think about it these are all things that appeal to a teenager to 20 something that wants to find a unique identity by fitting in with a cliq that looks just like them. In reality it means nothing just a fashion choice. For instance I liked punk music when I was in college, but I didn't dare dress like a punk.

it's just the way some people like to dress. it's a type of fashion & it's popular. if you don't understand the appeal, then don't worry about it.

I would imagine it is the same reason anyone wears fashion accessories or makeup, because they think it looks good and it reflects their personality.
