Manners were more evidentual in earlier days. The hayday of etiquette was in the Victorian era (especially from 1860's onwards), but forms of it still filter down. Manners are still in use today - you don't find too many people chewing with their mouth open (thank goodness!), but manners (like society and sucsessive generations) are constantly evolving. Take swearing for example. My parents (both in their 70's) never swear. Now, you can hear all types of swearing on the telly. I'm sure that words that we find truely offensive and vulgar will evelntually be 'down graded'.
