  • I understand he went to hell or hades and brought back many that would have not been in hell based on his new covenant and then returned to earth and then Heaven.
  • After returning from Hell, Jesus rose again from the dead and walked amongst the people before rising to the Right Hand of God, at which point He gave us the Holy Spirit, our great comforter.
  • I know it is unorthodox to ask rhetorical questions, but I was more interested in the reasoning that people used than the answer itself. Actually, everyone here seems to be referring to the right scripture, but are getting thrown off by the translation. The scripture in question is (Acts 2:29-31) "Men and brethren, let me freely speak unto you of the patriarch David, that he is both dead and buried, and his sepulchre is with us unto this day. Therefore being a prophet, and knowing that God had sworn with an oath to him, that of the fruit of his loins, according to the flesh, he would raise up Christ to sit on his throne; He seeing this before spake of the resurrection of Christ, that his soul was not left in _HELL_, neither his flesh did see corruption." (KJV) “Men and brethren, let me speak freely to you of the patriarch David, that he is both dead and buried, and his tomb is with us to this day. Therefore, being a prophet, and knowing that God had sworn with an oath to him that of the fruit of his body, according to the flesh, He would raise up the Christ to sit on his throne, he, foreseeing this, spoke concerning the resurrection of the Christ, that His soul was not left in _HADES_, nor did His flesh see corruption." (NKJV) "You can be sure that the patriarch David wasn’t referring to himself, for he died and was buried, and his tomb is still here among us. But he was a prophet, and he knew God had promised with an oath that one of David’s own descendants would sit on his throne. David was looking into the future and speaking of the Messiah’s resurrection. He was saying that God would not leave him among the dead or allow his body to rot in the _GRAVE_." (NLT) Interestingly, the word "Hell" is not a biblical word. In fact no where in the Bible should this ever show up. (For more information: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hell#Biblical_words_translated_as_.22Hell.22), however since it's a very popular tradition, many Bibles keep it in and many pastors continue to teach it. In fact, many teachings regarding the afterlife run totally contrary to scripture. For example, In the same chapter we are told: "David himself never ascended into heaven" he is "still here among us" (vs 29 -34). But investigate it for yourself, (Ec 9:5, 10; John 3:13).
