"Michael" was the front-runner for a very long time. In the last eight years, "Jacob" has taken the lead. It's looking like "Emily" is the new favorite for females. It all depends on when and where you grew up. I would have said that John and Mary were the most unremarkable names I could think of. It changes with time. Educated people tend to pick the more interesting names for their children but 20-30 years later those names catch on with the uneducated and become commonplace. When I was growing up, Brandon and Brittany were rich kids' names. These days you can't swing a dead cat without hitting one.
