  • 1 knots = 1.15077945 mph Simply multiply
  • http://www.militaryfactory.com/conversioncalculators/speed_knots_to_miles_per_hour.asp Or, knots * 1.15 = mph
  • I have no idea

  • Here's a little history for you: A knot is one nautical mile per hour. However, a nautical mile is NOT 5,280 feet. A nautical mile is calculated by dividing up the circumference of the Earth at it's equator into 360 degrees (a full circle), and each degree subdivided into 60 minutes. Each minute of arc is a distance of one nautical mile: 1,852 meters or 6,076 feet. (Closer to 6,076.115 feet, but let's not quibble.) So, WHY was the nautical mile calculated this way? Because Sailors can't walk on water, so they used the division of the circumference of the Earth at the equator as the standard. Thus, one nautical mile an hour is 6,076 feet per hour. Now, the "statute mile" of 5,280 feet was established by Engllish parliment under Queen Elizabeth I. "Statute", because this meant "law". A mile was often arbitrarily described by various means, which would result in different lengths: a thousand paces, each five feet long, would give 5,000 feet as a mile. A Scots mile was 320 rods (six ells of 37 inches) long, resulting in 5,920 feet. The English parliment's actions defined a uniform, legal definition for what a statute mile was, and this is where we get the 5,280 feet we use today. Why did they not simply say "one statute mile is equal to one nautical mile, or 6,076 feet"? Beats the heck out of me. If you were to ask my sister this question, she would likely stare at you for a while and answer: "Because snakes don't have legs!" Which, when you think about it, is really as good an explaination as any. When you ratio a nautical mile to a statute mile, you get 6,076 divided by 5,280 or about 1.15. So, to convert knots to MPH, multiply knots by 1.15.
