  • Photosynthesis. Cells containing chlorophyll convert carbon dioxide from the air and water from the soil into glucose. The glucose is used for energy and for building carbohydrates and cellulose to create the structure of the plant. Nitrogen and phosphorus (in much smaller quantities) are also absorbed from the soil to produce the proteins the plants need ... such as the chlorophyll that started it all.
