They'd have to be really fat or really stupid, or both.

I agree with American Idle.... There is no way you couldn't know. I mean when the baby kicks, they KICK, unless your dumb enough to think that's gas. If your THAT dumb, maybe you shouldn't be procreating.

It has happened - usually to slightly overweight women. Some of them had just thought that they had stomach problems. Some women have *much* easier pregnancies than others.

I think that many large women are not aware until very late into the pregnancy, because they do not notice the difference and assume it's normal weight gain or one of many digestive problems they may be facing. I doubt very much that any of them didn't know prior to going into labor. That's an excuse girls use who are too young and never decided to tell their parents or lovers for fear of being forced or pressured into having an abortion, or for other reasons beyond my grasp.

it happens, rarely, but it happens. A friend of mine told me that her neighbour in italy had three children without knowing she was pregnant...she continued her periods, put on very little weight...but her doctor noticed that her ankles swelled just before she gave birth, so that was what alerted her one day when she was at my friend's house. similarly, I remember my mother telling me that the local doctor had gotten into trouble because he had diagnosed a stomach virus in a woman who gave birth to a baby several hours later...

There have been a few cases, in almost all of them the woman is rather young (In her teens) where she does not recognize that she is pregnant until she goes into labor. It is rare but it does happen. Apparently in a few women its also possible that they can still have their monthly cycle during pregnancy. Or at least that is what I'm told.

Yes it is! When women do not have a regular cycle, it is less likely they would notice that they are missing their periods but that does not mean that they can't get pregnant. Women who are overweight often have irregular periods and this can happen to them. This also accounts for the unnoticed weight gain as a woman who is already quite heavy would a. gain less weight in pregnancy than a thin woman and b. not notice the shift in weight from "fat" to "child." Not noticing pregnancy is also sadly common in drug users who also tend to gain little weight (even thin women) and are often oblivious to the state of their bodies anyway.

We had a friend who was very obese. I remember her talking about having an upset stomach often and not feeling well. After she got back from the doctors she was told she was 6 months pregnant! It was shocking and joyful at the same time. She had a healthy baby girl.

If the child giving birth was young enough and did not realize the changes her body was making. Young girls don't always have regular periods. I find it hard to believe an older woman would not know.
