  • Memory and motherboard have to match in their specs. Older motherboards are not forward-compatible with memory specs that did not exist at the time of manufacture, but some memory specs are backward-compatible with some older motherboards. For example, an SDRAM 266 DDR motherboard could often take SDRAM 333 DDR. The best bet is to know your motherboard make and model and see what specs and speeds are supported. If you have a name-brand machine then maybe you have something more particular like a service tag number (in the case of Dell). If you really have not much clue what you have then run Belarc advisor www.belarc.com . Then start shopping online memory sellers, the stores, or the used equipment outlets.
