I have two kids that are very active in sports and I love it when someone takes their pictures. If you can take action shots maybe you could go to a little league game and take pics for the parents. Sometimes people hand out cards with a website where you can go view and purchase the pics.

Take what you love and sell it on the Internet and in art fairs and galleries. You'd be surprised at how well you can do selling your art that way. That is a very popular way to sell art here.

You can just set up an account at istockphoto.com and post your work. If you're looking for actual freelancing, remember that you'll spend 90% of your time finding assignments and maybe 10% doing the work. And that's after you're established. The job is mostly sales, not photography. But if that is what you want to do, get a copy of the 2007 Writer's Market. The same types of clients may be in need of photography work. Bear in mind that stock photos (like photos of buildings and nature) are inexpensive, so to make money at it, you will need to be able to do custom work (e.g., taking pictures of my product for my catalog) - and for that you will need a studio, and probably a good deal of equipment, backdrops, etc. If you're after the "starving artist" idea of having your art for sale, then just go for it and don't worry about how much money comes in. But if you're looking to make a living, definitely invest in equipment and be prepared to hit the pavement to get yourself out there. Freelance commercial photography is much more lucrative than selling people photos that you took.
