Help answer this question below.

Can I claim my father as a dependent on income tax? He lives with us in our garage apt. over our garage, we pay all his living expenses and bills? He does receive social security & pays for his car and car insurance.

    You can if the following conditions are met:
    1)He cannot have made more than $3,400 in income last year (that includes the retirement income)
    2) you provided more than 50% of her support.

    If these conditions are met, you can claim her as a dependent.

    Since you pay most of his expenses I think you have a good shot. I think the 1040 form has good instructions and info on determining his status as a dependent.

    I haven't really helped you but good luck.
