Question

Help answer this question below.

I was prescribed Hydrocodone. Upon taking it this past week, I have bouts where my skin gets itchy and I have developed a few blister like 'hives' on my hands and arms. Could this be a reaction to the medicine?

Yes, it could. I wouldn't keep taking it without checking with a doctor. You could end up in the hospital or worse.

Bouts of skin getting itchy most likely is a "sensitivity" and not an allergic reaction. If the hydrocodone is working, then try taking Benadryl 25 mg by mouth every 6 hrs. (Benadryl 25-50mg Q6 PO)
If you have any shortness of breath, stop and call a doctor (or 911). Otherwise it is just inconvenient.

hydrocodone is an opiate baised narcoitc med comes in 5mg codine/500mg acetometiphine,or7.5/750mg. Therefore since it is in fact in the opioid family it causes itchiness, STOP scratching! It will disipate over time as ones body builds tolerance to the opiate based narcotic. In themean time religiously apply coca butter lotion/Oil&/Or some heavy cream lotion. Hope I could b of some help, goodluck, n b aware ANY opioid or narcitic can& Will always be highly addicting!

Hydrocodone is an Opiate. Opiates make you itch. Think of hydrocodone as the Advil of the Opiate painkiller family. Usually cut with Acetaminophen in order to decrease the strength of the opiate. This is why there are warning labels not to drink on Hyrdrocodone/Percocet type medication because Acetaminophen can damage the liver (where alcohol is oxidized). Bottom line is you scratch, you get welts.
