-turn off computer -open case -ground yourself to the case -unplug wires to hdd -remove screws holding it in place (HDDs are mostly electromagnetic these days so don't use magnetized tools!) -swap drives -replace screws (don't overtighten) -plug wires back in -close case -power on pc and reinstall operating system or (optional) clone old drive's contents back to new drive

Turn the PC off but leave it plugged in. Open the chassis/case and touch a bare piece of metal (not the power supply unit) to discharge any static in you. Unplug all the cables (usually only one 4 pin power and ribbon data cable). Remove the drive from it's bay by either, undoing the retaining screws or releasing the clips that hold it in place. If the new drive is to be the master/main drive for your installation of Windows, make sure the jumper settings are correct (there's usually a diagram on the drive.
