Question

Help answer this question below.

I have a 1998 Dodge Stratus 2-5L v-6 auto with 84,000 miles. Oil lamp light came on while in city traffic. Checked my oil level and oil level was good. Replaced oil sending unit and nothing changed.During highway drive the oil lamp light is off. Help!

It is always worth while to see what can turn the light on. Maybe a faulty oil level sensor? If the oil level sensor trips and you add oil, it may take several drive cycles for the light to go out.
Your friendly nieghborhood mechanic will have a manual oil pressure gauge that screws into the hole where your oil sensor is installed. Be very careful with this problem. If you have no oil pressure, the engine will destoy itself in a VERY short time!!!

The oil light means that oil PRESSURE is low, and not necessarily the oil level. Checking the oil level is next to meaningless. You need to check your oil pump to ensure that it is functioning properly and pumping enough oil into the engine at the correct pressure. Obviously, during city driving, this is not happening, since your light is coming on. Take the car into a shop. I am not aware of a method to test an oil pump, so you may need to replace it. If you replace it and the problem persists then a more serious issue may be present.

I had that problem too. So, I tried 20 40 oil instead of 10 30. The light came on when I pulled up to a stop sign anyway. Very puzzling - and I'm sure low oil pressure can't be a good thing for any motor. But I found the answer and ended the problem happily. Basically its this...

All oil thins out - more so the hotter it gets. In newer motors its not a noticeable problem. Some engines, as they wear have more friction - friction creates more heat and oil absorbs the heat. That hot, thinned out oil easily squeezes out of oil passage ways and bearings like air out a hole in a tire. Under those conditions, your motors oil pump cannot replace the oil quick enough. So, oil pressure drops down. The light comes on to warn you. Speed up the motor and the pump again can keep volume up - and the light goes out. Sound like your car problem?

I'm a believer in a product called the worn motor treatment from mega power. Dashes with oil pressure gauges show the improvement easily. Both product features keep your oil from thinning. And on my car, kept the oil lite off.
