My theory: The crew drank some of the cargo of industrial alcohol. Being uneducated sailors - "rabble", they probably wouldn't have believed that the alcohol was really toxic. Maybe they thought diluting it would be alright. (Even today, people do this and die.) In a drunken rage they mutinied, killed the officers and tossed them overboard. The officers being dead they couldn't sail the ship and even if they could, they couldn't take it into a port without being arrested for mutiny. So they climbed into the life-boat thinking they could row to the coast and land undetected. But alas! they all died of alcohol poisoning and/or drowning.
