I do fairly well on my old 256MB Radeon 9800XT. Sure, the framerate in only in the 50s when running 1600x1200x32 with the effects on medium, but if my old card can manage that then anything built in the last five years is just a penis extension. Now, if you are one of those people like my buddy who complains that the ripples on the puddle he just ran through look a little jaggy and he's only getting 97FPS on his 27" widescreen, then maybe a mondo dual-card setup is for you. If you are like me and are more worried about not getting fragged and thus can deal with framerates only twice as high as a TV picture then a basic card will do you and you can spend the money on system RAM and junk food. Considering that high-end cards cost more than any two desktop systems I've ever owned, they aren't worthwhile regardless of CPU. BTW - Clockspeed isn't a good measure since a 2.4GHz Core2 Duo will curbstomp my 3.4GHz P4. So, what CPU *do* you have?

My PC currently has a Pentium 4 1.5Gb, Geforce FX5500 and 1Gb of SDRAM

it depend on that if you just do desktop stuffs like applications, encoding, movie converting, multiple files opened, active and playing then you should upgrade CPU for GPU mostly they have something to do with gaming but if you really want to upgrade your GPU from gaming the highest GPU i known is HD4670/AGPx8 you can play modern games even games this coming 2010 but dont expect that you get very high FPS with that old CPU/RAM of yours
