Shades of "The Butterfly Effect" and "The Sound of Thunder" (Sci-Fi short stories, both made into movies). I would consider going back to about 100 years prior to Columbus and teach the native Americans weapons (gunpowder, rockets, the wheel), naval, and air technology (sailing ships & hang-gliders) - and tell them: kill all white people who land, destroy their ships. This would convince the Europeans that any ship that went "west" was doomed to never come back, and allow the native Americans to develop a culture which could keep their claim on their country and survive. Of course as an American this means I would not be born . . . which means I could not go back . . . which means they wouldn't learn those things . . . which means I would be born . . . and would go back . . . yielding the classic temporal paradox.
