A more complete quote here would be helpful, both from the book and from Quinn. I don't think there is large disparity between documented LDS history and what really happened. There are some apparent discrepancies, such as the report of the Kinderhook plates given in the official 'History of the Church', but the discrepancy is understandable when explained fully.
