  • Executives normally have contracts with the firm that dictates the terms and period of notice to be given by either side. Having said that, if the termination is not on amicable terms and if the firm believes that the executive could do something to damage them during the notice period, they may choose to pay out the notice and the executive is escorted out of the premises immediately.
  • While it is not a good idea to burn bridges, an employer can fire you on the spot for any reason they choose, as long as the reason is not discriminatory and you are in a protected class of individuals. It is called "employment at will". It is a fallacy that you have to give a certain amount of notice. You can walk in and say I quit. However, as I said, burning bridges is not a good idea and it is proper to work out a transition phase.
