There is no blood test or anything like that. What there is is the tender points test. http://www.fibromyalgiasupport.com/fibromyalgia-tenderpoints.htm If you have pain in any 11 of the 18 points, you have fibromyalgia. That is the only test there is. I have fibromyalgia, and I have had it back at least into my early teens, at least thirty years. I was only diagnosed a couple of years ago. That is a long time suffering without treatment or answers. The nurse practitioner who diagnosed me is a fellow sufferer. As such, she has a deeper understanding of the disease than most. We both have found that the more tightly we control our allergies, the less pain we have. So I would say you are on the right track with the allergy connection. She says there is a school of thought that fibromyalgia is an auto-immune disorder, so being tied to another auto-immune disorder like allergies makes sense. Have you been tested for food allergies or celiac disease? They are finding that food allergies are much more common than previously thought and that they underlie a lot of other problems. Celiac used to be thought to effect 1 in 10,000, now they know it is 1 in 133. They have better testing for it now, and it is turning up a lot of undiagnosed cases. When you stop eating the things you are allergic too, you start feeling better. The big 8 food allergens are wheat/gluten, fish/shellfish, peanuts/treenuts, soy, eggs, milk. Those are the most common triggers, but you can be allergic to almost anything. My list includes celery, licorice, thyme, apples, raw tomatoes, and goes on through about forty new foods, including most of the big eight. In the meantime, my nurse practitioner has prescribed a muscle relaxer, called Zanaflex (tizanidine) that gives me a lot of relief. You can safely take up to 8 mgs at a time, and she has written the prescription so that I can take 4-8 mgs a day, depending on my pain level. Most days 6 is plenty. I take it at bedtime, as it makes you dizzy and sleepy. It gives me a good nights sleep, uninterrupted by pain and that takes care of the tiredness. I'm pretty good all day, but the pain starts to creep back in through the evening. By bedtime, I'm usually hurting, but by then its time to take it again and I get relief pretty quickly. Hormones also really effect the pain level, and since I had a hysterectomy a few months ago, it has gone down to the dull roar that it used to be mid-cycle and it doesn't get into the crushing pain that I used to have in the days before my period. I hope that helps. Feel free to track me down if I can help. Its a nasty disease, and I know how bad the pain can be and how much it can rob you of your quality of life. But there is help out there. At least doctors are taking it a little more seriously these days, and there are some things that help.

Oh my God. I didn't realize my new allergies could ahve a connectiion. I just know everything is happening at once. I am suddenly allergic to coffee, alcohol , the cold..snow and cold weather gives me hives..I am always sick to my stomach after eating or I am sneezing my head off..I suspect I am allergic to bread now.. I have tendonitus all over my body and am currently in a leg cast for the severe tendonitus in my foot..I've had it for 7 months and have been unable to walk on it. My shoulders scream in pain using the crutches...I have been suffering with sever pain in the shoulders neck and arms and hands for two years. I have had surgery after surgery and ONE doc mentioned fibro...but nothing has been done. I cannot sleep. I am tired all the time. I have lost countless jobs due to this strange illness. I think I am going to see my doc and demand he pay a bit more attention and ask him to really look into the fibro..I cannot go on suffering like this any more...7 months on crutches has been too long. Thank you so much for your response. I may be in touch.
