The first ODI was played between Australia and England on 5th January 1971. It was a hastily arranged match when the first three days of the third Test in the 1970/71 Ashes were washed out due to rain. Officials decided to abandon the match and, instead, play a one-off one-day game consisting of 40 over per side [of eight-balls per over] to appease the disappointed public. Australia won the toss and elected to field first. Geoff Boycott of England received first ball in an ODI and Garth McKenzie bowled it. Geoff Boycott was also the first wicket to fall in an ODI when Bill Lawry caught him off an Alan Thomson delivery. Geoff Boycott scored 8 runs of 37 balls in that match. J.H Edrich,Boycotts opening partner scored the first ODI half century when he scored 82 runs from 119 balls. Australia won the game by 5 wickets.
