  • I haven't done martial arts but I have instructed and been instructed. I think what is happening when they seem unable to process a simple command is what sometimes happens to me. Often, I have focused my listening on "getting the command word" to the point that the directive (don't, now, wait until I say, complete, step) is lost and I react instantly to the action not the directive on the command. There was actually a study a few years back that showed that children do not hear the "don't" of a directive so much so that when you say "don't touch that" they hear "touch that". .. Which explained, for me, the puzzling situations that made me say "But I just told you don't touch that!"
