losing your insurence

Honda civic or Toyota yaris?

There can be a number of reasons for this happening from dirty injectors to sparkplugs to a stopped cataletic converter or muffler. I could also be since you say it is a vette someone's foot is getting a little heavy!

The computer system in it. I had a old 84 ford pick-up that at first was giving me 20 to 24 miles per gallon. Then it started acting up & went to only giving about 4 mpg. By resetting the system, I got back my 20 + mpg. This is only one thing that can do it tho. There are many others items on today's cars/trucks that can cause the problem.

a lower octane will do this

...giving OPRAH a ride!!!

A leaking gas tank or gas line would certainly do it. A bad crankshaft will do it too.
-
octane wont make that happen unless it had water in it and if it did you would notice a change in how the engine runs it has to be something else like exhaust leak or malfunctioning sensor ect.
-
Either a fuel leak, a clogged catalytic converter or muffler, or a bad oxygen sensor. Is the check engine light on?

Driving around with your parking brake on!
-
Crappy gasoline. a fouled spark plug. Clogged Air Filter. Dirty Injectors.
-
The best way to figure it out is to start at the beginning and work from there. First, is the gas bad. Then it could be injectors, plugs, and any number of other things. Check your tire pressure too. Don't think that would cause it to be cut in half but it does have an effect.

I would go with vacuum leak. Is this an OBD II? Check fuel trims.
