The most common answer is that it comes from a serge fabric originally made in the French town of Nimes: serge de Nimes. This was eventually shortened to denim. However, the "serge de nim" were wool-based, while denim has always been made of cotton, though both possess a twill weave. My own personal theory to explain this is that someone produced a cheap knockoff of "serge de Nimes" using cotton, and opted to give it a similar but not quite the same name, much as you can buy a "Rolix" watch in certain Far East markets. I have no actual evidence for this, but it sounds plausible to me. :-) For more information, see: http://www.levistrauss.com/about/history/denim.htm

Denim was created in Nimes France. It was named after the town and was called 'de nimes.'
