G'day Singwell, Thank you for your question. William Tell is like Robin Hood: a legendary figure from the Middle Ages who no-one knows existed. He is said to have lived in the Canton of Uri in Switzerland in the early 14th century. A majority of Swiss citizens are convinced that he existed but many historians are not. There have been no documents found proving his existence nor telling of a bailiff called Gessler in Central Switzerland. I have attached sources for your reference.
