Bedsores are caused by lying in bed too long without being moved. The pressure reduces or eliminates blood flow to the affected areas, leading to death of the tissues involved. http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/bedsores/DS00570

When a person is forced to lay for a long time the skin tends to become chaffed and sore and finally breaks down. It can be quite serious and a very painful condition . It happens particularly in elderly people whose skin becomes thinner over the spine and buttocks . The heels and elbows are also very prone to sores.

AKA decubitus ulcer. When the boney prominences break down the skin's integrity due to pressure or friction. Hip bones, elbows, toes, shoulders, feet, all can break your skin down. If you have a low albumin level (protein), it makes healing time slower. Being ill, overweight, in a cast, partially paralyzed, or diabetic all up the chances. With some illnesses (End stage Renal disease, plus congestive heart failure for one) no matter how hard you try to prevent them, they frequently occur. The severity of the bed sore determines what stage it is 1 through 4.
