There are several ways, but first of all cancerous moles have a definite look to them which is dark and there is usually a redness around it like it is irritated. They may also take a biopsy.

Biopsy is the only sure way to know. Get it done.

I think it depends upon the doctor's feelings of how it looks... I know in my case, I had it removed and then it was sent for testing (did not hurt in the slightest, so I definitely will not put it off again out of fear of pain!) Ultimately, the only way to tell is to send either the whole mole, or part of the mole, to be tested I assume.

I have a raised mole on left shoulder I was concerned with. My GP told me as long as there is hair growing out of it (there is) and the the hair is not white (it's not) then it is not cancerous.
