Maybe the previous president would have to stay in office. But, given the size of politicians' egos, I can't see this ever happening.

A very unlikely event as everybody love power. Just for the sake of the argument, if nobody ran for the office there would still be an election, so whoever got the most write in votes would be elected. If the winner declined the job then it would fall to the Speaker of the House of Representatives. If they declined then it would follow the succession order laid out in the Constitution. (Even if such an event were to occur we would most likely not have any qualitative decrease in the ability to govern anyway, even if a complete moron were to be placed in the office - oh, I forgot, that has already happened).
