  • Any intact male can get your female pregnant, if she isn't yet spayed. If you are not going to show them and earn their points and titles...to prove they should even be considered for breeding (to IMPROVE the breed), then start talking with your Vet now about getting the other male neutered and your bitch spayed. Over a thousand dogs and puppies, many purebreds, are killed WEEKLY in the USA. Sweet, smart, wonderful dogs and puppies...no longer cute or sweet or loving, just DEAD NOW. Your Bitch is right at the age to have her first heat cycle and she CAN get pregnant if she is bred. EDIT: DID YOU MEAN SHE IS 2 AND 1/2 YEARS OLD OR MONTHS OLD? Six MONTHS is when they have their first heat cycle normally...6 to 8 months old...If she is 2+ YEARS OLD you are lucky she hasn't already bred! Either talk to the Vet and get it set up, or buy, borrow or ask on Freecycle for some crates and keep them separate! Here is how the cycle runs, if your Vet feels it would be better to wait another couple of months. The cycle is the same for all breeds. 1. Pro-estrus (swelling of the vulva, clear discharge that turns bloody) 8 to 13 days. 2. Estrus (normally bleeding has stopped. Vulva less turgid, but still swollen. NOW is when the bitch is receptive to breeding most likely and to conception) 4 to 7 days. 3.Metestrus (when puppies are growing, if successfully bred. Also time with false pregnancy can happen) 6 to 10 weeks. 4. Anestrus (quiet period of variable duration when there is no activity in the bitch's reproductive tract) 15 weeks.
