Dos can only understand file/folder names that are 8 letters or less. If the name is more than 8 letters, it receives a ~ and then a number. Ex. Documents and Settings is too long so in DOS it would be: Docume~1. If there are two folders with the same first eight letters then they would be: Docume~1 and Docume~2
