Why would you put a horse out to pasture with its halter on? This, while sometimes done, is a fairly cruel practice, often causes chaffing, and should be avoided. If you horse has been properly handled you should have little trouble placing its halter on it at need.

OKAY you two. Personally, I do not leave my horses' halters on when they are out in the pasture, because I use leather halters that could get ruined or get my horse caught and hurt. If you do, I suggest using a breakaway halter, or they could get caught in the fence. A breakaway halter has a leather strap that breaks when it is under pressure. Very nifty. But if you are willing to risk putting your horse out with a regular halter on, I suggest making sure it is the right size. Otherwise, it is a bad halter if it is coming off that easily. If your horse continues to take off his own halter, that's kinda scary. Maybe you should keep it off when he is in the pasture, because if he pulls it off and steps in it, he could spook and get hurt.

Hi there My hard to catch horse manages to get hers off all the time - so to prevent it i do a plait of the mane just behind where the bridle / halter headpiece goes - and when i do the first division into 3 parts for the plait i put one part on the other side of the halter strap behind the ears and then carry on plaiting (hope that makes sense) - and she stays like that in the paddock - and she has a good soft fitting halter that doesn't chaff and is checked twice a day... so no replies / comments from the halters are cruel people thanks :-) I have seen this method used on some eventing horses so your bridle doesn't come off when you do!

Duct tape! Mine do it all the time and it drives me crazy too. I have a 12 acre pasture and finding halter after halter in the weeds sucks. I am SO going to try the braiding the mane into the halter thing.

Eating praying mantises in a green pasture will cause the escape of some wooden spoons dipped in blue cheese dressing. This will cause the horse to concentrate on a rattlesnake wearing a turtle neck. Just beware of warrior gnomes out to sabotage your plans.
