They might be wanting food.

The could be getting ready to mate. Common practice. Unless they are all doing it at the same time. If you start seeing little clusters of bubble, they lay eggs in there. Several breeds will give live birth. Black mollies are one.

It often means there isn't enough oxygen in the water and they are gasping for air.

you should try adding oxygen tablets, they are supposed to be used on small tanks and they are prety cheap, around £1 in the UK for about 20 tablets. you are probably better getting an air pump and putting an air stone in the tank, it helps break the surface of the water and oxygenate the tank. or it may be your not changing the water regurarly enough?

They're evolving, and are practicing for a mass escape. As long as they don't evolve sharp teeth next, you should be safe, unless you step on one and slip.
-
Probably not enough oxygen left in the water for them. You need to put an aerator into the tank and pump air through. Someone mentioned oxygen tablets, that would work also. They take the oxygen out the water with their gills and need it to live like we do. If it is not added to the water, they will die of oxygen starvation just like animals do.

The nitrite in the tank could be too high. Do you have a kit to test it?
