  • Dumbledore does know what a horcrux is. He wasn't trying to get that memory to understand what a horcrux was, but to hear what Slughorn told Tom Riddle. The memory showed one thing that Dumbledore did not know. That was the slip-up that Tom made: "7, isn't 7 the most powerfully magical number?" Dumbledore needed Harry to find out about Slughorn because Slughorn had to give up that memory willingly. ----- The books are not perfectly written anyway... so you need to bear that in mind! :-)
  • He does know what the Horcrux is well bits of it any way. But he needs to know how much information Slughorn told Voldemart. He needs Harry to find out about it because Slughorn won't tell Dumbledore as he is to embarrassed about the information he revealed to Voldemart about the Horcruxs.
  • A wise man finds his knowledge from a variety of sources. If the only way to find something out is to use a boy then use the boy.
  • Of course Gandolf the White is the greatest wizard and he could school Dumbledore in a New York minute.
  • he knows, he needs to know how much voldemort knows about them and to find out how many he made
  • Dumbledore wanted Harry to get Slughorn's memory to know what Tom had asked him about because he was certain that Riddle wanted to know if it was possible to make more than one horocrux. He was certain that Tom had made more than one Horcrux but he wanted conformation for which he needed Slughorn's memory.
