How does this happen? When I answer a question on AB, there are 6 answers posted already. Yet my answer is posted as, say, "Answer 4 out of 7" and not "7 out of 7". How did I manage to "jump the queue"?

As I understand things, answers are ranked by points received. If your answer has the most number of points awarded to it, then you will be listed "1 out of 7." If the least number of points are given, you will be "7 out of 7." +5

On March 22nd 2009 the site crashed. The infrastructure was unable to take the entire load of the intense activity here, we were told. In about 15 days the site was restored but with some of the glitches like the one you point out. As I understand it now instead of just one server multiple servers are being used. So till the answer you post is finally sorted out and fed into the database as a permanent record the anomalies you point out will continue. I think they are still working on fixing the glitches.

There is a 5-minute timer for editing of questions. My guess is it has to do with when the back end officially adds a question to the total count of answers. When you answer and it says your reply is the 7th answer out of 4, the last three answers probably haven't yet cleared the 5-minute timer.
