If you are legally separated, any assets that you acquire after the date the separation began are usually considered to be yours alone. You do need to check the regulations in the jurisdiction in which you reside or consult a lawyer to be absolutely sure. Lawyers are expensive, but it could be a couple of hundred dollars wisely spent. At the very least, you would need to establish that the purchase occurred after the date of legal separation and that you used only your own funds to acquire the property.
