My first answer disappeared so apologies if this is repeated. I don't know what a secret cooking contest is but a pot luck dinner is when everyone invited brings a dish. The hostess may request a specific type of dish i.e. dessert or a vegetable dish or she may leave it to you to decided. It would be ineresting to know where the phrase came from but alas I can't but until I do a Google search I can't pretend to be that knowledgable :) I hope this helps.
