First set six and six on the scale. Take the heavier set and put two and two on the scale and leaving off the last two. If one of the pairs on the scale weighs more weigh these separately. If they weigh the same, weigh the last two separately.

It's impossible to tell by weight if there is no weight difference. It would also have to be a balance scale and you would need to know what the difference in weight was if there was one.

Only possible if you know which weighs more a real or a counterfeit. Taking that the counterfeit weighs less... 1. Weigh 6 vs 6. Take the 6 that weigh less. 2. Weigh 3 vs 3. Take the 3 that weigh less. 3. Weigh 1 vs 1. If one weighs less it's the counterfeit. If both weigh the same, the one you didn't weigh is the counterfeit. With a fourth weigh with a different method you would be able to tell which was counterfeit even if you didn't know which one weighs less at the start. Hope this helps.
